I often get the question, “Can my blog make money?” The answer is yes, as long as your are willing to the necessary work that must be done to succeed. I usually get a lot of questions about how much work in necessary. I then let my students know that blogging is for people that have a long term approach to making money online. I am always trying to sort out the “serious” from the “curious.” The serious people will take the ball and run with it. They will do what must be done to succeed. If that is you, I will provide you some nuggets that will help you get your blog where you want it to be:
1. Make sure you can write in your chosen niche — If you are fixated on “how to make money blogging,” I suggest you move your fixation to becoming an expert in some part of your chosen niche. You are going to have to write a lot of high quality posts in your niche. The more you can position yourself as an expert, the better your readers will respond to your posts. You don’t have to have total mastery of your niche. You just need to get very good at some part of this niche. This is easily attainable if you want it bad enough.
2. Put together 10 superb “pillar posts” — You want to have some posts on your blog that are so outstanding that you will reference them in other posts you write. This are called “pillar posts” as they serve as the bedrock foundation of your blog. You want to take your time and make sure you have some outstanding “stuff” on your blog right away. You only have one chance for a first impression, so make sure it is a good one.
3. Build the rest of your blog around your foundation — Once you have your bedrock in place, you simply build around it. You can refer back to your pillar posts often, or you can just use “internal linking” to link news posts into your main posts. You will get the hang of it as you build your blog out. The key is to build with quality as your norm, and your readers will come back to visit your blog often.
You can very much control if your blog makes money. You just have to be willing to do the necessary work to succeed. Do not worry about how much work you need to do… just work and you will succeed.
