With the amount of data we store on the local hard drives of our computer, it is important to we develop a good backup plan. A good backup plan will help keep our data safe and protected, and available when we need it most. Hard drives are known to wear out, or crash, which could potentially lead to partial or complete data loss.
If you think about all the data that you are currently storing on your computer, you may realize that much of that data can’t be replaced. Digital photos are a perfect example of files that you can recreate, mainly because the moment the photo was taken has passed. Some other data, such as work documents, can be replaced, but at a cost of time. Imagine spending hours recreating documents for your work just because your hard drive crashed.
If you develop a good backup plan to protect your data, then if you hard drive crashed you could simply restore any file from a backup copy. There are many options that are available to you with regards to backing up your data.
For example, you could invest in an external hard drive to keep one copy of your files. These hard drives have a large storage capacity, and are easy to setup. You simply plug the drives into either a USB or Firewire port on your computer and your operating should automatically detect the hard drive and assign it a drive letter.
If you have multiple computers that you would like to backup, then you can go one step further and invest in a network attach storage (NAS) device. You simply add hard drives to the NAS device and then connect it to your network. This provides a storage server for your network that all your computers can connect to for easy data backup.
There are other options such as optical discs and online data backup providers that are just as easy to use. In the end, however, it is up to you to decide on your data backup plan so you can ensure your data files are protected.
